During February, 2009, Stately Oaks Plantation in Jonesboro will be brimming with information and ideas for "Romantic Memories of Yesteryear" with displays in every room representing the customs, fashions, flowers and (in the dining room) food from nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
The items for the displays are a combination of antiques and reproductions with many illustrations and photographs from original sources. One of the displays includes a beautiful organdy wedding dress from the 1860s. Reproduction bouquets will show the changes in bridal florals.
Learn how a daughter of a well-to-do father would prepare her trousseau. Examples from diaries of the 1860s provide information - and what is an infare? There will be a display also telling the customs of the slaves marriage ceremonies and the laws concerning them. Stories from diaries provide interesting information. Wedding styles changed considerably as the twentieth century progressed. There will be many examples using clothing and photographs of different years.
The highlight of this event is the original wedding dress of Emily Orr Haynie who donated the house to Historical Jonesboro/Clayton County, Inc. in 1972. She was married in the parlor of the house. This dress has survived many years and events including Hurrican Katrina. Martha Wilson is the event coordinator and an ongoing consultant for the Atlanta History Center and an authority on period clothing.
On Valentines Day, Saturday, February 14th, 2009, the School House will be the scene of romance as couples renew their Marriage Vows. This event requires an extra fee and reservations.
